With a stretch of shows and programmes lined up, FARWIN HAMID wonders if entertainer Aznil Nawawi feels he’s being stretched too far.
WELL-known for his talents as a host, Aznil Nawawi has made each programme he has been connected with entertaining and successful.
From his debut on Pop Kuiz to Juara Lagu, Anugerah Skrin, Anugerah Planet Muzik, Akademi Fantasia, Melodi, Macam-macam Aznil (his own talk show), Tom Tom Bak and Jangan Lupa Lirik, Aznil has proven that nothing is impossible.
He has made each programme unique and appealing.
This host, actor, director, singer and writer is as talented as he is hardworking and passionate about his work.
In a recent interview, Aznil revealed that his days are now packed.
“I’m involved in many projects but I’m having fun doing them and can’t wait for more,” he said.
Among the projects is the movie Magika, from KRU Productions, a rendition of Alice In Wonderland with several Malaysian folk tales woven in.
“I’m honoured to work with such great stars as Ziana Zain, Ning Baizura, Vanida Imran, M. Nasir and Mawi. “
In Magika, Aznil plays Pak Pandir, a senile and sloppy old man.
“One of the funny experiences is that they had to add more wrinkles to make me look older and I was smiling all the way thinking I’m not that old after all.”
Aznil’s movies include Sama Tak Serupa (1995), Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam 2 (2005), Cicak Man (2006), Otai (2007) and Cicak Man 2 last year.
Besides acting, Aznil is hosting a radio show daily with Din Beramboi on Era from 6am-10am.
“I wanted to venture out of the TV and cinema scene and radio seemed the perfect alternative.
“I feel well-received on radio and I’ve been nominated as Best Radio Announcer for Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian a few times,” he said. “I feel really good and blessed as this is not my forte.”
Aznil is currently involved in the theatre version of Cicak Man, to be showcased at Istana Budaya at the end of the year.
He is also keen on directing a children’s play at Istana Budaya.
“Thorough planning needs to be done as psychology plays a big part in handling kids.
“I think it would be great and good to do a play on children. There are hardly any plays on children and it’s sad because they are fun and the various age groups have much appeal.”
With a schedule as hectic as this, Aznil tries hard to have a regular life and his main concern is his two children.
Fame hasn’t changed his kids and him. Aznil says they are like other children.
“My working life hasn’t changed them at all. They are aware of what I do and my hectic schedule has become a norm to them. After all, I do regular stuff with them, checking their homework, shopping and watching movies.”
Aznil says his kids aren’t keen on following in his footsteps after all.
Much has been said of his involvement in children’s TV programmes.
“It started with Pop Kuiz and went on to Akademi Fantasia.
“If you have passion, you will always leave a mark in the field you are involved in. Discipline and hard work are the keys to success and I feel content if I give my all to a project and it turns out well.”
Aznil’s Jangan Lupa Lirik, making a comeback in April, is a project for which he will be going nationwide for auditions.
Tom Tom Bak is also coming up and Macam-Macam Aznil is pending.
Something not to be missed is Aznil’s involvement on Astro’s Oasis channel; a new programme which will be quite a far cry from other shows he has hosted as this is a religious talk show.
“I want people to open up to the concept of religious talk shows,” he said.
This show features teenagers from the streets, one Ustaz as advisor and Aznil as facilitator.
Aznil will also be launching Festival Tari Kanak-Kanak soon. This festival showcases children from ages six to 12 and their talents in traditional dance
