- I was based in Beijing from September 2005 to March 2009. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. My first job after college was with the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. I then worked for the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, the New York Daily News and the San Jose Mercury News. After 24 weeks in postwar Iraq for Knight Ridder Newspapers, I joined the Post's metro staff in 2004, covering the culture of official Washington.
